Curaçao
What is the best time to visit Curaçao?
Curaçao is a wonderful year-round destination, with daytime temperatures around 30 degrees. There may be a bit more rain between November and January, but it often falls at night.
How can you pay in Curaçao?
The official currency of Curaçao is the Caribbean guilder (Cg or XCG). You can also pay with US dollars (USD) in many places, provided the banknotes are clean and undamaged. A commonly used exchange rate is approximately XCG 1.75 = US$ 1. When paying in dollars, you will usually receive your change in Caribbean guilders. Euros are hardly ever accepted. Currency exchange is only possible at banks, which can be time-consuming. Additionally, banks usually charge a fee of XCG 15 to 25, and there is a daily exchange limit of €300. Don't forget to bring your passport and flight ticket. A handy rule of thumb: the exchange rate is roughly €1 = XCG 2—so simply divide by 2. Debit cards: You can easily pay with a Dutch debit card in most supermarkets, shops, and restaurants. Keep in mind that your bank will usually charge a small currency exchange fee of around 1–2%. Credit cards: Visa and Mastercard are accepted in many places; American Express is accepted somewhat less frequently. Credit card payments are usually processed in US dollars, often resulting in an additional fee of around 5%. Apple Pay: While not yet accepted everywhere in Curaçao, the number of locations where it can be used is growing. Cash & ATMs: It is difficult to obtain Caribbean guilders in the Netherlands. If you want to have some cash upon arrival, it is best to bring US dollars. There is an ATM at Hato Airport, though unfortunately, it is not always operational. Fortunately, there are plenty of ATMs scattered across the island. Costs: When you withdraw cash using a foreign debit card, both the Curaçao bank and your own bank charge fees. Combined, this can easily amount to around €10 per withdrawal, regardless of the amount. Since the local bank charges a fixed fee per transaction, it is often more cost-effective to withdraw a larger amount at once. ING cards are accepted, but at many shops you can only pay in USD, which is slightly less cost-effective. Important! Configure your debit card settings and remember to bring your card reader! Tipping: Tipping is appreciated in Curaçao, but it is not mandatory.
How safe is Curaçao?
Curaçao is generally a safe island. As everywhere, use common sense and do not leave valuables unattended.
What needs to go in the suitcase for Curaçao?
Clothing: Light, airy clothing and swimwear, of course. A UV shirt (cardigans and jackets are really not necessary). Footwear: Flip-flops! Water shoes are also handy. If you plan on hiking, bring a pair of Teva sandals or something similar. If you also plan on climbing, bring hiking boots as well. Snorkel set: It is worth buying a good snorkel set back home; they are generally more expensive here. You can buy a cheap set here, though, and we also always have a few sets available. Sunscreen: SPF 30, preferably reef-safe. Mosquito repellent: containing at least 25% DEET.
